Whether he is using a brush, palette knife or his hands, the vibrance and feeling of florals jump off the canvas in artist David Griffith’s still life work. Thick oils loosely applied in a frenzy of movement evoke the emotions of Spring- happiness, renewal and joy.
“I’m interested in the evocative power of color and space. I want the viewer to have an emotional reaction to each painting. I want to create powerful images that encourage the viewer to see their world in a new way- paying attention to the energy, form and structure around us.”
Beginning his visual career as a photographer, David’s work increasing veered toward the artistic. In 2000, David held an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington . Entitled Carnival, the work respresented the bold colours and movement of Carribbean carnivals.
David’s work in oils is a natural extension of this work. Enamored by the sponteinaty of carnival, David sought to capture other subjects with rythmn, movement and strong colour. Loose brush strokes applied in an expressionist manner helps to capture the essence of his floral subjects. David’s work is not a literal representation but a spiritual one; they startle the eye and help us create new perspectives of everyday objects.
